The idea was to act like a trumpet mute to enhance the upper mids, but worked well in taming the speaker overall too.īoth guitar parts in the following clip were done on the same guitar (90's les paul standard) and amp settings, just different guitar settings/ pickups, with very minimal post processing.

The beam blocker I made out of hard packing foam, cut into a cone about 5 inches in diameter, and about 3 inches deep - the cone was glued to the inside of the grill and protruded into the space of the speaker cone. The biggest difference, FWICT, is the mids. Based on what the OP wrote about his RI, the top end is very similar. The sound has been enhanced with a speaker 'beam blocker' I made to try and reduce some of the low mid distortion of the speaker (which I think may be because of the stiff cone, I dont know). My P12Q is an original smooth cone, not a reissue. It is in a 15w single ended open back combo, guitar plugged straight in and miced with a small diaphragm condenser about 8 inches away iirc. Secondly, the Jensen speakers are not the best in the high end area and are much better applied in an fender style warm 5E3 circuit than in a Marshall 18 watt circuit as these two amps produce distinctivley different sound. The R is 93 decibels and the Q is 96 decibels as well.

Something that might be interesting is the recording I made with it below. The P12Q is a much better speaker and of course more expensive. I second that about a very stiff cone - I don't think Igot it truly broken in (and I have since sold the speaker). I have owned and used just one of these speakers in the past.
